Protein Project
Proteomics
An Internet Laboratory

Imagine yourself as a Biochemist. You have just been employed by a biotechnology corporation in the field of Proteomics. You need to present the four levels of protein structure to group of investors to fund your research. How would you explain the structure of the most important molecules in science today so that your audience will understand these complicated molecules.
You will now enter the world of computers and proteins to prepare your presentation. Complete the sheet below for Friday. This will be used in class on Friday for a special activity. Make sure that you understand the four levels of protein structure. Complete your amino acid flash cards and work on learning for understanding the name and the characteristics of each.
OPEN A WORD DOCUMENT. SAVE IT AS PROTEOME PROJECT THEN FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW TO COMPLETE YOUR SPECIAL REPORT ON PROTEIN STRUCTURE. THIS IS A LABORATORY GRADE
As you proceed through this exercise, follow these instructions to complete the assignment
For all charts and images to copy into your word document
a. Right click on the image with your mouse
b. Select copy
c. Go to your word document
or
a. Select image
b. Control + C
c. Go to your document
d. Control + V
AT THE END OF THIS LABORATORY YOU NEED TO SAVE YOUR DOCUMENT TO THE H DRIVE AND PRINT IT OUT
OR
E-MAIL THE DOCUMENT AS AN ATTACHMENT TO YOUR HOME COMPUTER AND PRINT IT OUT IN GLORIOUS LIVING COLOR
OR
SAVE IT TO A Flash Drive or Disk AND PRINT IT LATER
If you do not have WORD on your home computer save your document as rich text format and then save as an attachment and send it to yourself.

2. Go to the following link to see what happens when you link amino acids together to form a peptide bond.
http://web.mit.edu/esgbio/www/lm/proteins/peptidebond.html - Copy the picture into your document
3. A Protein Data Base. What is a Protein Data Base? Follow the link below and learn all about key protein molecules in the cell.
Learn all about FIBRIN Read all about the molecules. What is the function of fibrin?
1m1j - follow this link and study the structure.
Click on Sequence Details to see the primary structure and secondary structure.
Click on Download Chain A in Fasta Format
Save to your document or print
4. Research secondary structure. Check the pictures on the pages below. See if you can copy and paste them into your document. If you can't print and attach to your document

Why is secondary structure important?
5. What is tertiary structure ?
Visit this site and research what causes tertiary structure. How does this affect the function of the proteins?
These Inter-molecular interactions are the cause of tertiary structure. Copy and Paste examples into your document page

7. Go to the BIOWEB Homepage
Scroll to the Bottom and Find your textbook link
Select Chapter 3. Select Macromolecules. Select proteins and play. You should see an animation of a collagen molecule. Collagen is a fibrous molecule What is unique about its tertiary structure? It also has Quarternary structure. WHY? Record your answers in your Microsoft Word Document
