How to Transform Raw Data into Graphs and Tables

Pie Graphs, Bar Graphs, and Scatter  Graphs

1.  Go to Programs

2.  Open Microsoft Excel Graph.  In Excel a graph is called a chart.  The actual area of the graph is the chart area.  The graph area is the plot area.

3.  Adjust Table to make categories for data

4.  Type in categories, stoats, cats, rats ( Dependent variable) in the first column. Leave A1 empty and then put your choice of predator, in A2.

5.  In the second column, B put the prey or food for the predator. Continue labeling new columns with each prey or food. Under each prey put the number eaten

7.  On the top menu bar, click on the picture of the graph.  This opens a choice of types of graph

Graph I

a.  Choose pie graph.  Click on one of the choices

b.  Follow the directions

c.  Give a title to the graph

d.  Finish

Creative.  Edit the plot area.  Edit the chart area.  Use options

Change colors

Put labels in the pie pieces

Print in the lab or email to yourself and print at home in color.

Graph II.  Choose another version of the Pie Graph

a.  right click on the graph and edit - show percent for each slice of the pie

b.  Edit other presentation aspects, title, key, or colors by investigation options

Print in the lab or email to yourself and print at home in color.

 

To Make a Bar Graph.  Open a new page or start a new worksheet.

Place data in the sheet in the manner shown below.  Please adjust for your own data.  You do not want to place anything in A1. 

Leave A1 blank.  IN A2 Put site 1

                         IN A2 put site 2

IN B, C.........put your organisms on the rocky shore

Underneath put the number

When you have completed your table.

Go to the graphing menu bar and select( column graphs )bar graphs. Follow directions You will have editing to do.  It does require experimentation and some variability. 

 Follow directions for completion of your graph.  Right click on plot area or chart to change or format the chart.  You can change from the default colors, adjust the print, change the size, and transform your graph.  In general right click over the part that you wish to change and options will be presented.

When you are satisfied, open a word document.  Copy and paste your table and graph into your word document and save. Print or email to yourself.

How to Make a Scatter X,Y Graph.  Fish and Gill Disease

1.  Input data into workbook

2.  Leave A1 blank, In A2 begin to put in the data for the independent variable

3.  Label your dependent variable category, B1 and in B2 begin your data

If needed for comparison

4.  Label your dependent variable category, C1  and in C2 begin your data

5.  Hilight your data and select graph, scatter graph subtype 1

6.  Add your title and labels

7.  Finish

8.  Choose Chart, Add trendlines  Choose linear.  You will need to click on each data set for each line for B and C

9.  Edit trendlines

10.  Edit gridlines( Always right click and then choose colors)

11.  Save picture of fish.  Click on plot area.  Choose format   Insert in plot area

12.  Format chart area.  Use contrasting colors

13.  You may want to edit the title.
