Boys Lacrosse Team Loses to Bridgewater-Raritan in State Championship Game

Boys Lacrosse Defeats Montclair 9 - 5 to Advance to the NJ State Championship Game. Cherokee is now the first South Jersey team to advance to the Group 4 State Championship Game in history of boys lacrosse in NJ. Senior Bobby Thorp ( Pictured - Above) put on a show for the North jersey boys scoring 5 goals and 2 assists in the Nj State semifinals. Senior TJ Ahern had a hat trick with 3 goals, but maybe the most important guy on the field was senior goalie Ryan Olson. Olson made a lot of phenomenal saves to keep the Chiefs in the game in the first half as Cherokee trailed 4 -3 at half time. Cherokee came out from half time ready to roll and quickly took the lead at 5 - 4 and never looked back. Frank Garvey scored the first goal of the 2nd half for the Chiefs to tie the game at 4's. Cherokee will now face North Jersey Rival Bridgewater Raritan for the State Championship Title. Bridgewater eliminated the Chiefs in the 2008 playoffs in the quarterfinal round, but Cherokee got a big comeback win in the beginning of this season 4 - 3 over Bridgewater, so the third time will surely be a grudge match with the State Title on the line. The NJ State Championship Game is Friday - May 29th at Watchung Hills H.S. at 5:00 pm

Boys Lacrosse Handles Lenape 11 - 4 in NJ State Quarter Finals. Chiefs defeated a persistent Lenape squad in the state quarters finals with quality possessions and solid team play. Lenape tried to employ a slow down game and Cherokee stayed with their tough zone defense and created turnovers that converted to offensive opportunities. Seniors Bobby Thorp, Lenny Fox, and Frank Garvey were again the offensive leaders - all with 2 goals each. Chiefs top scorer was Enrique Montoya with a quiet 3 goals on the crease. Seniors Deven Thomas ( pictured - above) and TJ Ahern each had 1 goal apiece. Cherokee will now advance to the NJ State Semi Finals " Final Four" on Tuesday May 26th at Cherokee Stadium under the Lights @ 7:30 pm against the winner of Hunterdon Central / Montclair.

Montoya Scores 8 Goals as Boys Lacrosse Handles Clifton 16 - 6 in Opening Round of NJ State Playoffs.
Junior attack Enrique Montoya (pictured - Right) scored a career high and school record 8 goals in a state playoff game to led the Chiefs to the easy first round victory over visiting Clifton. Senior attack Bobby Thorp had a big day with 4 goals and 5 assists in guiding the offense. Cherokee defense shut down Clifton and long stick defender Erik Beck had a strong day causing turnovers and clearing the ball. Seniors Lenny Fox & Deven Thomas each scored a goal and TJ Ahern had 2 goals. Cherokee advances to the State Quarterfinals and will face Lenape on Fri. May 22nd at 3:45 pm at Cherokee Stadium
Boys Lacrosse Defeats Perennial Power Moorestown in Playoff Tune up Game 10 - 9 Chiefs had control of the game from the start jumping out to a 3 - 0 lead in the opening few minutes of action. Frank Garvey had 3 goals and Bobby Thorp added 2 goals as the Chiefs move to solidify their # 1 ranking in South Jersey. Cherokee held a 10 - 6 advantage until the closing minutes of action when the Quakers rallied on some mistakes and turnovers to close the gap with 3 late goals. JV Boys Lacrosse Finishes their season with a big 3 - 2 win over Moorestown.
Varsity Boys Lacrosse Coasts Past Holy Cross 12 - 5. JV Boys Lacrosse Wins over Holy Cross.
Boys Lacrosse Wins Conference Championship with 12 - 4 Win over Lenape. Senior Frank Garvey and junior Enrique Montoya each scored 3 goals apiece to lead the Chiefs to their 2nd straight Olympic Conference - American Division Championship. Seniors Deven Thomas and TJ Ahern each scored 2 goals.
Varsity Boys Lacrosse Rolls Past Washington Twp 10 - 3. The Chiefs came out a little sluggish with the game tied at 3 at half, but came out and played hard in the second half with 7 unanswered goals to put away the Minutemen. Chiefs got 2 goals apiece from Mike Zeuli, Enrique Montoya, and Frank Garvey. Senior Goalie Ryan Olson has been stellar in the cage this season and made 9 saves to help shutout Twp in the 2nd half. Bobby Thorp, TJ Ahern, Brian Osler, and Evan Clyde each scored 1 goal to help the offensive attack. JV Boys Lacrosse Defeated Washington Twp 5 - 1. Montoya Strikes Again with Game Winner in Overtime as Varsity Boys Lacrosse Defeats St. Augustine 9 - 8. The Chiefs get a huge road win at St. Augustine (ranked # 2 in NJ prior to game) thanks to the overtime goal by junior attack Enrique Motoya. Montoya, a foreign exchange student from Germany, has been an asset to the Chiefs squad who lost 2 returning starters on offense prior to the season. Montoya has been playing on the crease for the Chiefs attack and has been delivering in big situations this season.Cherokee had the lead in the closing minute of the game but St. Augustine scored the tying goal with just 1 second remaining forcing the game to overtime. Cherokee got big performances from seniors Frank Garvey and Brian Osler who each scored 2 goals on the night. Cherokee is ranked as the # 1 team in NJ in Group 4 and is # 8 overall in NJ with a 9 - 1 record according to laxpower rankings.
Enrique Montoya Scores 6 Goals as Varsity Boys Lacrosse Cruises 15 - 2 Past Lenape under the Lights at Cherokee Stadium. Junior Enrigue Montoya scored a career high 6 goals and dished off 2 assists and senior Bobby Thorp ripped the net for 4 goals and passed off 2 assists. Bobby Thorp Scores 100th Career Goal And Frank Garvey Scores Game Winner in Overtime as Varsity Boys Lacrosse Defeats Saint Joseph's Metuchen 12 - 11 . Congratulations to the Boys Lacrosse Team and Bobby Thorp. Yesterday senior Bobby Thorp scored his 100th career goal and the Chiefs won a thrilling 12-11 overtime game against a tough St. Joe's Metuchen team. Deven Thomas dominated face-offs and Frank Garvey scored the game winning goal with less than 1 minute left in overtime. JV Boys Lacrosse Lost 5 - 2 to St. Joe's Metuchen

Enrique Montoya Scores Game Winning Goal with 17.6 seconds left as Varsity Boys Lacrosse Completes Comeback Win over Kinnelon 9 - 8. Enrique Montoya (pictured - above), a foreign exchange student from Germany and a great addition at crease attack, scored the game winner on the crease with 17.6 remaining. The Chiefs were down 6 - 1 at half and rallied to tie the game at 8 - 8 with 2:36 left in the game. Senior face-off man Deven Thomas had another big day winning all the 2nd half face offs and scoring 4 goals to help the Chiefs go to 5 - 1 on the season. Cherokee's defense stepped up in the second half as well led by seniors Ryan Olson, Ken Maher, AJ Sindoni, Erik Beck, Ty Powell, and Zach Wilkins.

Deven Thomas's 5 Goals Lead Varsity Boys Lacrosse to Win over Washington Township 15 - 7. Senior mid-fielder and face off guru Deven Thomas scored 5 goals as the Chiefs downed rival Washington Township in the Olympic Conference contest. Senior attack Bobby Thorp had 7 assists and a goal to guide the offensive attack for Cherokee. Enrique Montoya scored 4 goals and Frank Garvey and Lenny Fox each netted 2 goals apiece.

Boys Lacrosse Gets Big Win over Bridgewater-Raritan 4 - 3. The Chiefs were led by seniors Lenny Fox and Bobby Thorp who each had a goal and an assist for the comeback win. Cherokee rallied back from an early 3 - 0 deficit to defeat Bridgewater who knocked Cherokee from the state playoffs in 2008. JV Boys Lax Lost to Bridgewater
Varsity Boys Lacrosse Loses 8 - 7 to the Peddie School. Senior attack Bobby Thorp scored 2 goals and senior face off specialist/ mid-fielder Deven Thomas won 16 of the 19 face offs, but the Chiefs could not score in the 4th quarter after ending the 3rd period tied at 7. JV Boys Lacrosse Wins 8 - 2 over Peddie.
